Wolfsburg, 25 September 2008 - Between the first and fifth generations, more than 1.7 million Golf GTIs have been embraced by driving enthusiasts, making the GTI the best-selling hot hatch in the world. Now there is a new model on the starting block: At the Paris Auto Show (4 until 19 October 2008) Volkswagen presents the world premiere of the new Golf GTI Study.
The GTI's chassis, with its new electronic differential (XDS), redefines curves and traction completely. With its 150mph top speed and 210 HP turbo engine, the GTI still manages to travel 31.4 miles per gallon of gasoline.
In the spring 2009 the sixth Golf GTI will go into production - a single entity born from a sporty chassis and agile engine. By 1,800 rpm the engine develops a maximum torque of 207 lb-ft of torque. After 6.9 seconds is carried out the Sprint of 0 to 62 mph. Its top speed is drag limited to 150 mph.
Sitting 22 millimeters lower than a standard series Golf, the springs, absorbers and the rear stabilizers of the study were completely again co-ordinated. Beyond that, the GTI will offer Volkswagen's DCC dynamic chassic control system as an optional feature.
"We wanted a consistently clear GTI Design, a car which looks aggressive but is also stylish,“ says VW chief designer Volkswagen AG, Walter de'Silva. The Paris design study is the fusion of those two classically GTI design elements. The GTI V contributes the black honeycomb mesh grille and a hood which lowers over the headlights. The broad horizontal grille, meanwhile, harks back clearly to the GTI .
